You may (or may not) have noticed a new page called Flickrish.  Not surprisingly, this is my photo page.  I’m not going to pretend that it’s any great shakes.  Three photos total so far and no clue when that will grow.

I was a little ticked at the process of getting my Flickr account set up, again, after the takeover of Flickr by Yahoo.  I already had a Flickr account, but was forced to make a Yahoo account I didn’t want.  Naturally, all the usernames I liked were taken.  I’d enter a user name only to be told that the name was taken and suggesting an identical name with what appeared to be a random string of numbers behind it.  I’m sure you’ve seen this behavior before.  Anyway, that’s why I finally ended up with the username i_hate_their_name_suggestions.

Download.com has a nice article listing “Twenty programs you shouldn’t be without“.  This caught my eye because I had just gotten an email from a friend who was setting up her friend’s new PC.  While many of us know which programs we want before we ever start shopping, this list provides a few really good suggestions that will help outfit the less technically inclined user.

The list includes programs categorized as security, tools, and fun.  Recommendations include AVG, ZoneAlarm, Ad-Aware, Firefox, and Skype.  Overall, while I wouldn’t put all of the programs listed on any one machine, there are some good choices for a variety of purposes.

Not a bad list to have in your back pocket when your friends and/or family need help setting up a machine.

You’ll notice that there’s a new page on the right titled Recommended podcasts - IT Security.  If you have an interest in listening to informative podcasts on this topic, you should find this to be a good resource.  Next up, general tech podcasts.  I won’t guarantee when though.  It may be a few days.

I mentioned in my last post that I “overheard” something on CyberSpeak, but it occurs to me that I didn’t explain what CyberSpeak is.   Time to correct that.  CyberSpeak is a podcast.

I could write a long post about what a podcast is and how to use them, but that information is available all over the web.  I’ll be happy to post some material that I already have written, if I receive enough comments asking for that.  Given the current readership of this blog, “enough comments” is => 1. 

CyberSpeak focuses on computer forensics and crime investigation.  It is of variable length, but averages around an hour.  In-depth and timely coverage of forensics issues.  By timely, I mean that I’m in the market for a forensically sound acquisition tool and write blockers, and guess what they discussed on their last episode?  Yep.  Those guys are like Tonto, they’re sidekick.  Yeah, yeah… I hear the groans.  Enough lousy puns, here are the deets:

This web site, www.securityanalogies.com, is a wiki dedicated to collecting analogies for security terms. I may need to contribute, since like most security geeks, I’ve been using analogies like this for years. Fantastic idea and a great example of how every conceivable niche is addressed somewhere on the web.
